Upon listening to Blitz the Ambassador‘s album, Stereotype, you can almost swear you are listening to a modern rendition of Phil Spector’s “Wall of Sound” method. You are hit with live instruments including a brass section (!); certainly, there are emcees out there that utilize musicians in their albums, but something needs to be said about Blitz. The song “Ghetto Plantation” opens up with a Latin-inspired guitar solo almost a minute long; the hit “Breathe” featuring Rob Murat opens with a flute and a harp and not soon after you are hit with a brass section worthy of being in a swing band.
Born and raised in Accra, Ghana, Blitz attended Kent State University and upon graduating moved to New York City to pursue a career in music. He does a great job at providing listeners with a larger picture of hip-hop; he celebrates the rhythm and joy it brings in its danceable beats yet he does not sacrifice thoughtful lyricism in favor of crass, mediocre words which have a tendency to tarnish all of rap music. He celebrates all aspects of hip hop by giving us what hip hop can be instead of what we’re accustomed to listening to.
Blitz performed with French-Chadian sisters Les Nubians (!!!!!!!!!!!!) last night at Le Poisson Rouge and I’m kicking myself in the ass for not knowing about this show. But Blitz is returning to the stage on Sunday August 15th at Summerstage and he’s showing my favorite borough, the Bronx, some love next Saturday August 21st for the Ghana Parade at Crotona Park. Come through!
